FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) – A nine-year-old girl died at a Cincinnati hospital Saturday morning after she crashed on her bicycle in a campground.

The Franklin County Coroner said the girl died at 11:19 a.m. An autopsy scheduled for Sunday will determine her exact cause of death.

Indiana Conservation Officers said the bicycle crash happened at the Mounds Recreational Area campground in Franklin County just north of Brookville.

Eyewitnesses told officials that the girl was riding her bike down a paved hill at a high rate of speed and was trying to slow down by using her feet instead of her brakes. She went off the road and into a small ditch. Officials said her throat and neck area hit her handle bars.

Witnesses and other campers rushed to help her before paramedics arrived. She was airlifted to Children’s Hospital of Cincinnati. She was not wearing a helmet or any other protective equipment when she crashed.
