MONTICELLO, Ind. (WFLI) — Workers at a Monticello factory were evacuated overnight after a fire broke out.

It happened at the Ball Metal Beverage Container plant at 501 N. 6th Street shortly before 1 a.m. Friday.

Monticello Fire Chief Galen Logan said the fire began in the factory’s ductwork. Exhaust had built up and ignited a small fire. An explosion in the ductwork then caused the fire to spread throughout the entire ductwork system and to the roof.

Logan says three Monticello firefighters received minor injuries from that explosion and were treated on scene.

He said the fire had been contained but that crews would be on scene for several hours. Chalmers, Idaville, Monon and Buffalo fire crews assisted.

Chief Logan said it looked like the plant received hundreds of thousands dollars worth of damage.
