Sand dune will be closed for summer

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – A state landmark and national park will stay closed this summer and possibly longer. Mount Baldy is a part of the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.

Last July, a 6-year-old boy fell through the dune and was buried in more than eleven feet of sand. It took more than three and a half hours to rescue him.

Since then, scientists have discovered three more holes on Mount Baldy. Officials said the dune will not open again until they figure out what caused the accident. provides commenting on many stories to allow for constructive discussion.
