FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – May is Bike Month and city officials are encouraging residents to bike to work Friday.
A free breakfast will be available at Headwaters Park West starting at 6:30 a.m. for cyclists who want to stop before work. The breakfast will include coffee, bagels, and pastries from local businesses.
The entire month has been filled with cycling activities across Fort Wayne. Trek the Trails started May 6 at Solomon Farm Park. The Trek the Trails events happen every Tuesday in May and generally continue through the summer.
May 20th riders can meet at Deer Ridge Elementary or May 27 at Moser Park Trailhead. Both events start at 6 p.m. and the ride length is about seven miles. Friday’s bike to work day concludes with an after-party at Fort Wayne Outfitters.
Starting at 5 p.m., cyclists can enjoy food and drinks, entertainment, and conversation along the river near the Wells Street Bridge.
Saturday is the first ever kickSTART festival along Main Street in downtown Fort Wayne. Activities include the Fort4Fitness Spring Cycle Tour which will include tours around Fort Wayne with lengths of 18, 33, and 43 miles. Kickstart4Kids will include bike tips for children, including inspections of their bicycles, helmet checks, an obstacle course, and a family bike ride. kickSTART will also include IPFW’s Sculpture with Purpose.
The event will include a dedication of 50 sculpture bike racks that have been placed all over the city. The festival will also include a Spring Trolley Tour by the Downtown Improvement District, a 65th Anniversary Open House by Visit Fort Wayne, and several theater, dance, and music performances by Arts United. All of the kickSTART activities are free except the Fort4Fitness Spring Cycle Tour. City officials have also scheduled other activities for Bike Month:
- May 21: Worldwide Ride of Silence – 7 p.m. at Lawton Park
- May 23: Watch Wadjda at Cinema Center – 7:30 p.m.
- May 30: Bike to Coffee – 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. at Dash In
- May 31: Le Tour de Fort – 1 p.m. Fort Wayne Outfitters and Bike Depot
