STEUBEN COUNTY, Ind. (WANE)  An off-duty Fort Wayne firefighter may have saved a man’s life by pulling him from a wrecked car Wednesday afternoon.

photo 4According to the Steuben County Sheriff’s Department, Luke Fenwick, 31, of Middlebury, Indiana, was westbound on Bayview Road from 200 West when he went off the road and struck a large tree.

Larry Bassett and Bryan Sorgen got to the scene a short time after the crash. Sorgen, an off-duty Fort Wayne firefighter, broke a window in Fenwick’s car. Sorgen and Bassett pulled Fenwick to safety just as the engine compartment of the vehicle burst into flames. Police said those actions most likely prevented more serious injuries and possibly save Fenwick’s life.

Medics took Fenwick to the hospital for treatment. Alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the crash.
