Landscape worker dies after being trapped underwater


FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE)  A landscape worker whose mower slid down an embankment near a retention pond and trapped him underwater has died.

According to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Robert Houser, 26, died Tuesday afternoon. Houser was operating a riding lawnmower near the edge of a retention pond in Westchester Lakes subdivision on Friday, May 9, when it slid down the embankment and into the water. Westchester Lakes is off of Scott Road on Fort Wayne’s southwest side.

Co-workers discovered Houser, got him out of the water, called 911, and performed CPR until medics arrived. It’s not known how long he was trapped underwater.

He was taken to Lutheran Hospital in critical condition and died four days later. provides commenting on many stories to allow for constructive discussion.
