Cincinnati — The Komets fell 4-1 in game 2 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals Saturday night at the U.S. Bank Arena in Cincinnati as the Cyclones even the series 1-1 and send it to Fort Wayne for games 3, 4 and 5 beginning Thursday, May 8 at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.
The second game of the best-of-seven series began the same as way as game 1 with no scoring and the Komets out-shooting the Cyclones 9-5.
The second period, however, was a different story. Cincinnati erupted for four goals beginning with Josh Birkholz’s second of the playoffs at 1:44 on the Cyclone’s first shot of the period. Cincinnati’s Josh Shalla netted his first of the playoffs at 5:52 for a 2-0 lead. Fort Wayne cut the Cyclone margin in half with Matt Carter’s first tally of the post season at the 9-minute mark. Shalla found the net for his second marker of the game, and playoffs, off a faceoff in the Fort Wayne end at 14:54 before Zach Budish gave Cincinnati a 4-1 lead on the power play through a screen in the front of the Komet net at 17:59 to finish the third period Cyclone storm. Cincinnati’s Byron Froese assisted on three of the four Cyclone goals for a three-point period.
The Komets threatened in the third with Shawn Szydlowski’s third goal of the playoffs at 17:29. But Cincinnati answered at 19:08 with an empty netter to seal a 5-2 Cyclones win, even the series at 1-1 and please the home crowd of 1,731 Cincinnati fans.
Cincy’s Rob Madore earned the win allowing two goals on 27 shots while Ben Meisner suffered the loss making 28 saves on 32 shots. The Komets were 0/4 on the power play. Cincinnati was 1/4 with the man advantage.
