FORT WAYNE, Ind. – With an offense cold enough to match the frigid temperatures at Parkview Field Monday night, the Fort Wayne TinCaps collected just two hits after the second inning in a 7-3 loss to the Great Lakes Loons. Fort Wayne’s bullpen surrendered five runs, allowing more than it had in the previous five games, as the TinCaps fell to five games below .500, their lowest mark of the year.

With a 3-2 lead, Fort Wayne (9-14) reliever Justin Livengood (0-1) allowed four runs in the sixth inning, as the game turned for good in favor of Great Lakes (14-10). Four batters after a Joey Curletta RBI single to tie the game, Dylan Moyer laced a three-run triple into the left-centerfield corner, which put the Loons up, 6-3. Paul Hoenecke tacked on another run against Genison Reyes in the seventh.

The TinCaps day at the plate got off to a promising start as first baseman Jake Bauers, making his home debut, made his first TinCaps hit a two-run triple to right field in the second inning. Two batters later, Jose Carlos Urena grounded out, scoring Bauers.

TinCaps starter Bryan Verbitsky, a 2013 third-round draft choice, worked five innings, allowing two runs, walking two and striking out six in his TinCaps debut. The last man out of the bullpen, newcomer Wilson Santos, worked two scoreless frames and fanned four.

Fort Wayne had just two hits after the second inning surge, and only three hitters—Fernando Perez, Dane Phillips, and Bauers—had hits. The Loons lineup had all but one player collect a base hit. Great Lakes starter Victor Arano (2-0), who made a spot start filling in for the injured James Campbell, struck out six and allowed three earned runs in five innings. With the victory, the Loons improved to 7-2 against the TinCaps in 2014.

Game two of the four-game set is scheduled for Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. The scheduled starters are Payton Baskette for Fort Wayne and Luis Chirinos for Great Lakes. The game can be seen on XFINITY 81 and heard on The Fan 1380 and TheFanFortWayne.com.
