IPFW freshman Mayu Sato has been named the Summit League Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year, announced by the Summit League office at the yearly pre-tournament banquet on Thursday evening.

Sato is the sixth Mastodon in the last seven years to be named Summit League Player of the Year, as she also becomes the fourth player in league history to earn Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year in the same season, joining former Mastodon Amy Recht (2008), Valparaiso’s Kate Kollarova (2001), and Marlena Maciolek of Oral Roberts (2000).

The Saitama, Japan, native has a 28-9 record in singles, including a 22-3 mark at No. 1 singles. Sato ran through the Summit League season with a perfect 6-0 league record – all at No. 1. In doubles, Sato is 24-10, including 18-5 at No. 1 pairs with Marcy Huck.

The Mastodons open their title defense on Friday when the team faces off against the Western Illinois Leathernecks in a noon ET first serve in Denver, Colorado.
