FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Home was indeed sweet on Thursday night as the Komets bested Reading 5-1, edging ahead of the Royals two games to one in their first round playoff series.
The Komets, who split the first two games with Royals in Reading, scored the lone goal in the first period when Aaron Clarke scored from his seat to give Fort Wayne a 1-0 lead.
Dean Ouellet – just activated from reserve – showed off some nifty stick-work 6:15 into the second period, giving the Komets a 2-1 lead. However, less than a minute and a half later Sean Wiles scored his second goal of the series to cut Fort Wayne’s lead to 2-1.
In the third the Komets put the game out of reach. Just 58 seconds into the frame Clarke would score his second goal of the night, pushing the lead to 3-1. Chris Auger then tallied his first goal of the series to make it 4-1. Brandon Marino added an empty net goal with just 54 seconds left to set the final.
Ben Meisner stopped 36-of-37 shots in goal for the Komets. Riley Gill stopped 40-of-45 for the Royals.
The Komets outshot the Royals 45-37.
The series continues with the next two games also in Fort Wayne. Game four is tomorrow night at 8 p.m. with game five slated for Sunday at 6 p.m.
