Here’s a good family project for you to work on: putting together your own emergency preparedness kit! Some of the most important items for you to include are:
- Water (1 gallon per person per day)
- Food (non-perishable)
- Flashlight & extra batteries
- Can opener
- First Aid Kit
- Hand sanitizer
- Radio (NOAA Weather Radio)
- Contact information sheet
Of course, no two emergency supply kits will be the same. Families with pets need to include items for them, some families may need to include medications, while others may want to include tools and things like duct tape, extra clothes, etc. Your kit can be as thorough as you prefer – just be sure to include the essentials of food and water.
These kits aren’t too terribly expensive to put together either. You should be able to get most of the items needed for a basic emergency supply kit for around $30. A thorough supply kit for a family will likely run you at least $50 but remember, you don’t have to buy all of that at once. It’s a good idea to grab a few items from week-to-week to put back for your supply kit until it is complete. Don’t forget to create one for in your car too! You never know when you may need it.
