INDIANAPOLIS (WANE) – A Marion County Sheriff’s Department deputy was killed in an off-duty crash Sunday night, according to Indiana State Police.

Emergency personnel were dispatched to the 8900 block of Action Road in the far-southeast corner of Marion County around 7:30 p.m.

ISP said Deputy Eric Stofer, 35, Indianapolis, was riding his motorcycle when he struck a pothole. ISP said the bike landed on Stofer after he lost control and crashed.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Investigators said Stofer was not wearing a helmet. He possessed a valid motorcycle license.

Speed or alcohol are not considered factors in the crash.

An autopsy is scheduled to determine the exact cause of death.

WISH-TV reported Sunday night that Stoffer has been with the Marion County Sheriff’s Department since 2003. He most recently served as an inmate transportation deputy in the jail division.
