Former Fort Wayne officer’s name added to memorial

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – A former Fort Wayne police officer’s name was added to the Law Enforcement/Fire Fighters Memorial of Allen County on Monday.

Someone accidentally shot Master Sergeant Kenneth Hayden in the leg when he responded to a crime scene back in 1974. Years later, he broke that leg and doctors found a tumor. Hayden’s leg ended up being amputated.

Sergeant Hayden retired with a medical disability in 1986, then died from cancer in 1989 at the age of 41.

The Allen County memorial is located at 1001 N. Wells Street in Fort Wayne.

Hayden’s name is also on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C.
