BASE: Dons Bats Explode In Series Finale Win Over SDSU

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - On the back of three, four-run innings, the IPFW baseball team won its series finale with South Dakota State 12-2 in a seven inning run rule. The win moves the Mastodons into second place in the Summit League with a 7-5 record, 15-23 overall.

Malcolm White led the Mastodons tying a season-high with three RBI, after going 3-for-3 at the plate. Carter DeBoe added a pair of hits while Lucas Salerno had three RBI and Greg Kaiser scored three runs and knocked in two more.

SDSU scored the first run of the game on a two-out double in the top of the second.

In the fourth, IPFW took its first lead of the series as Malcolm White hit a double with the bases loaded, scoring a pair of Mastodon runs. Lucas Salerno followed with a single up the middle to score two more IPFW runs, as the ‘Dons led 4-1.

The Jacks added a run in the fourth on a two-out single by Matt Johnson, but White gunned him down trying to stretch the hit into a double.

The Mastodons loaded the bases again in the bottom of the fourth on three straight walks. A single by White, a sacrifice fly by Salerno, and DeBoe capped off the run with an RBI single. After a hit batter again loaded the bases, Kristian Gayday drew a walk to bring home the final run of the inning.

IPFW closed out its scoring with four more runs in the sixth as the ‘Dons loaded the bases to begin the inning. Kaiser stepped in a delivered a double to the left-center gap, bringing home a pair of runs. Steve Lowden and Kevin Whitman sent back-to-back sacrifice flies to right field, bringing home the final two runs of the game.

Mastodon starting pitcher Steve Danielak picked up his second win of the season, throwing four innings, allowing two runs. Zach Mishler and Cody O’Neal combined to pitch three scoreless innings out of the bullpen.

IPFW travels to Western Illinois for a four-game series beginning April 25 at 4 p.m. (ET).
