Scouts receive badge 57 years after earning it

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – Two local boy scouts now have one more badge to add to their collections, more than half a century after earning it. Mike Poinsett and Curt Sampson hiked the trail with their troop 57 years ago.

The two men completed the 42 mile trek along the Johnny Appleseed Trail, but never received the travel merit badge.

“At the time when we were ten, eleven, or twelve years old, it was really something important and something that we could really be proud of and kind of neat now to have a little bit of recognition for that,” said Poinsett.

“Some people probably think it’s foolish but it was just one of those things that now we’ve got something that you had the memories and now we’ve got the proof,” said Sampson.

That 42 mile trail is now eight miles and still used by Scouts. provides commenting on many stories to allow for constructive discussion.
