MVB: #14 IPFW Sweeps Ohio State, Advances To MIVA Semi-Finals


FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The IPFW men’s volleyball team – hosting its first MIVA Tournament game since 2007 – swept Ohio State to complete the three-game season sweep of the Buckeyes by scores of 25-23, 25-22, 25-19.

With the win, IPFW improves to 21-6 on the season, and will travel to Chicago, Ill. for the MIVA Semifinal meeting between the Mastodons and top ranked Loyola on Wednesday, April 23.

Andrew Sellan knocked down a match-high 15 kills for the Mastodons, while Eddie Rivera had nine. Omar Rivera dished out 38 assists, as Sellan also led the team with two service aces. Omar Rivera had a team-high five digs, while the Mastodons out-blocked the Buckeyes 8-to-7, with Ramon Burgos leading the charge with five block assists.

The Mastodons never trailed in the opening set, as the hosts used a 5-0 run to turn a 5-4 lead into a 10-4 advantage. Ohio State battled back, climbing back to tie the score at 19 and remained tied through 23-23 before kills by Sellan and Bryan Saunders closed the door on the IPFW 25-23 victory.

The second set saw the Buckeyes lead early at 3-2; however, an IPFW 6-1 run turned the one-point deficit into a four-point, 8-4 advantage. IPFW led by eight at 20-12 before the Buckeyes fought back to climb into within as few as two at 23-21, but kills by Eddie Rivera over two of three points pushed the Mastodons to the 25-22 second-set win.

In the third and final set, Ohio State jumped out quickly, and led through the first portions of the middle frame; however, a 4-0 IPFW run using kills by Sellan, Luis Bertran, and Albert Klimek, put the team ahead 10-9, and would not trail again in the match, pulling away late in the 25-19 third-set win.

Ohio State (11-16) was led by Andrew Lutz and Miles Johnson who each knocked down a dozen kills, while Christy Blough dished out 33 assists. provides commenting on many stories to allow for constructive discussion.
