FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – A Fort Wayne woman who left her five-year-old son in 15 inches of snow back in January was sentenced to four years in jail, plus two years of probation.

Marquisha N. Whitten, 26, had a blood alcohol content (BAC) of .29 percent when her son was found in a pile of snow with severe frostbite to his hands and feet on January 20. Whitten’s neighbor found the boy in the snow and carried him back to her apartment.

Police said the boy was not wearing any gloves or socks when he got stuck in the snow. His snow boots were apparently filled with snow.

Whitten pleaded guilty to a neglect of a dependent felony charge on March 28.

On Thursday, Whitten was sentenced to four years in jail, plus an additional two years of probation.

Police said when the child was found in the heavy snow, it was -12 degrees with a wind chill of -34 degrees. Hospital officials told police the boy could lose fingers and toes due to the exposure.
