FORT WAYNE, Ind. – In its weekend series opener, the IPFW baseball squad dropped an 11-1 contest to reigning Summit League Tournament Champions South Dakota State.
Kristian Gayday was the lone Mastodon to have a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 at the plate. Shane Trevino drove in IPFW’s only run while Greg Kaiser and Carter DeBoe also collected hits on the afternoon.
SDSU opened the scoring with three runs in the third inning aided by an IPFW error.
The Jacks added two runs in the sixth, on a single and two more in the seventh on a triple and a wild pitch. SDSU scored three more runs in the eighth, all of which came with two outs.
IPFW scored its only run of the game in the bottom of the eighth with two outs. After walks to Evan VanSumeren and Brandon Soat, DeBoe was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Trevino brought home the Mastodon run on a single through the right side of the infield.
Ryan Wells dropped his record to 2-2 on the season, allowing four earned runs and five strikeouts in 5.2 innings.
The two teams will be back at it tomorrow, April 19, for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
