INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A dog named Adam is safe and sound after getting trapped under a bridge on Indianapolis’ northwest side Sunday evening.

Firefighters responded to 16th Street and Lafayette Road shortly before 6 p.m. When they got to the scene, they found Adam, a Boxer Chow mix, stuck on a log on the river.

The dog’s owner said Adam decided to go for a swim. After swimming out to the log, which was about 50 feet from shore, he couldn’t get back.

Firefighters say Adam’s owners tried to get him to come to shore for an hour and a half before calling for help.

Indianapolis Animal Care and Control and IMPD worked with firefighters to coax the dog back to land. They tried to use a teddy bear, animal treats and other methods that did not work.

Crews were able to bring Adam back on a boat. He was OK, and was given a few biscuits by officers. provides commenting on many stories to allow for constructive discussion.
