IPFW’s Kaiser Named Summit League Athlete of Month

The Summit League has named Fort Wayne baseball player Greg Kaiser (Fort Wayne, Ind.) as its Male Athlete of the Month and Western Illinois softball player Sammy Marshall (Naperville, Ill.) as the Female Athlete of the Month for March.

Kaiser collects his first career Athlete of the Month award after leading Fort Wayne offensively during the month of March. The sophomore second baseman had three games with a pair of home runs his first coming in an 11-3 win over Ball State on March 14. He also belted two homers as part of a three-hit game in the nitecap of a doubleheader against the Cardinals the following day. In the March 22 win at Eastern Illinois, Kaiser had four hits, seven RBI with two roundtrippers. A two-time Player of the Week, he added two hits in the series finale vs. the Panthers and opened league play going 3-for-3 with five RBI in an 8-2 win over North Dakota State on March 28. For the month, Kaiser batted .435 (20-of-46) with a .957 slugging percentage and .449 on-base percentage. He had six home runs, 24 RBI, seven runs scored, two doubles and two triples along with a stolen base and sacrifice fly in 12 games played. Kaiser was named one of Collegiate Baseball Newspaper’s Louisville Slugger National Players of the Week on March 17.

Marshall earns her first career honor after leading the nation in batting average and runs scored per game at the conclusion of March. The junior shortstop went a perfect 11-for-11 in the three-game series at IUPUI, earning her national Louisville Slugger/NFCA Co-Player of the Week honors on March 24. She was also named an NFCA Top Performer after going 10-for-19 with seven RBI, six runs scored, two home runs and a triple series’ against Morehead State and South Dakota State. In a March 10 loss at No. 20 Tulsa, Marshall went 3-for-3 with a double, one of four perfect games in March. For the month, the three-time Summit League Player of the Week batted .586 (34-of-58) with a .948 slugging percentage and .615 on-base percentage. She had 21 runs, 12 RBI, 12 steals, five walks, four homers, three doubles and three triples. From March 22-26, Marshall compiled a streak of 12 consecutive hits, one short of tying an NCAA record.
