Charity partners for an annual walk that supports needs of the homeless population have announced a new name. “Walking Home” will replace the event name known for the last 13 years as Homeward Bound. That name was tied to a statewide effort and had associated fees. With this change, all the funds raised will remain local. The proceeds will be divided among ten agencies that provide shelter, food, clothing, emergency assistance (for basic needs), case management, advocacy and/or transportation. Some agencies work with individuals, others assist family groups. Albert Brownlee, CEO and Executive Director of Genesis Outreach, Inc. notes that “while the name has changed, the mission remains the same.” Homelessness comes in many forms, but for those in the Fort Wayne area agencies and supporters are working hard to end all forms of homelessness.
Walking Home will be held at Headwaters Park East on Sunday, April 27. The event will include pre-walk entertainment with local artists, some food, and a mayoral proclamation. The walk is noncompetitive and will follow a 3.5 kilometer route through downtown Fort Wayne. WANE-TV First News and Noon anchor, Terra Brantley will emcee the event.
