Crews search for missing kayaker

BARTHOLOMEW COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) – Indiana Conservation Officers are conducting a search for a missing kayaker in the Flat Rock River Sunday afternoon.

Officers received a 911 call around 11:30 a.m. that a kayak had capsized and a kayaker was missing.  The missing kayaker has been identified as Enrique Quinonez, 27, of Kalamazoo, Michigan.

According to a press release, DNR officers are searching near Mill Race Park in Columbus.

Quinonez and a friend were kayaking north of the east fork of the White River on Flat Rock River when Quinonez’s kayak capsized. The Republic reports the other person, a Columbus man in his 20’s, made it safely to the bank and pulled Quinonez to a nearby tree.  He then for some reason lost his grip on the tree and went under water.

Neither of the men in the kayak were wearing life jackets. Officials said Quinonez doesn’t know how to swim.

Six boats and a helicopter were called to aid in the search effort. People are advised to stay away from the area

Indiana Conservation Officers have additional resources en-route including sonar equipment.
