DEFIANCE COUNTY, Ohio (WANE) – A Defiance County Environmental Services employee was killed Saturday morning after he was hit by a vehicle.

The Defiance County Sheriff’s Department said around 8 a.m. Max Hook, 87, of Hicksville, was trying to back his vehicle up to a dumpster in the Gingrich Road Refuse Pick-up Center in Hicksville Township.

But, the vehicle rapidly accelerated forward and hit employee Peter Simonis, 58, of Defiance. Simonis was pinned between Hook’s vehicle and a parked trailer.

Promedica Air flew Simonis to Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne. He later died from his injuries.
