FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – Sunday the Allen County coroner identified the man who died Saturday night after a fight in Fort Wayne.
He’s Darrell King, 45, of Fort Wayne. The preliminary autopsy results were that he died of asphyxia due to neck compression and position. That means some kind of pressure on the neck, from hands or an object, caused King to not be able to breathe.
His death was also ruled a homicide.
King was pronounced dead at St. Joseph Hospital around 6 p.m. Saturday after he was found at a reported disturbance at a house in the 2000-block of Gladstone Drive.
King’s death is the second homicide in Allen County this year and the first inside the Fort Wayne city limits. The coroner added that a ruling of homicide means an individual died as the result of actions of another person.
Saturday night police were interviewing a person of interest in the fight, but they have not said they arrested or charged anyone. The fight is still under investigation.
The following is the story posted Saturday night:
Fort Wayne police are trying to determine if a fight Saturday evening is to blame for the death of a man. They have a person of interest already in custody.
Police were called to a home in the 2000-block of Gladstone Dr. at 5:14 p.m. on a disturbance call. When officers arrived, they found a man unconscious and unresponsive. Medics took him to a hospital in critical condition, but hospital staff later pronounced him dead.
The initial investigation found that a fight happened between two adult males, but, why they were fighting and the nature of the fight is still unclear. Saturday night detectives were still processing the scene and interviewing anyone who might have information about what happened. The relationship between those involved and the victim was also still unclear. Right now, police do not suspect any gang activity was involved.
As of Saturday night, police had a person of interest in custody. That person was being questioned and has not been charged with anything. It’s too early to tell if any charges will be filed against that person or not.
While the man was pronounced dead after he was found at the scene of the fight, police are not directly linking the two. An official cause and manner of death will be released by the coroner. The coroner will also release the man’s name.
