FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – When’s the last time you went to the doctor for a checkup? If it’s been awhile, you won’t want to miss a free opportunity that could save your life. April is Men’s Health Month and for the fourth year in a row, the Fort Wayne Commission on African American Males and other community partners are offering free health screenings Saturday.
Some guys use the excuse they’re too busy or they feel fine. So, why go to the doctor? For others it’s financial reasons since the cost of healthcare’s increasing. That’s why the Fort Wayne Commission on African American Males feel it’s important to bring free exams to a place where all men go – the barber shop.
“When you don’t know that you have something going on, often times it’s too late when you find out,” leader of Fort Wayne Commission on African American Males Andre Patterson said, “So, it’s always good and especially with African American males. African American males do not go to the doctor regularly. So, that’s why we have it in the barber shops.”
Since 2010, it’s something Andre Patterson has been passionate about. Making free health exams available to men of all ages. Patterson says the screenings have helped some find out they’ve been living with diabetes.
“Without that screening, they would have never have knew. They were feeling good.”
Leaving diabetes untreated can lead to many serious health problems like skin infections, eye problems and nerve damage.
Nurses, pharmacists and other healthcare professionals will be giving the exams. Besides it being free, it takes less than five minutes.
“You can get your weight, height, blood pressure, your sugar checked, and then there will be resources that will give you information prostate exams. Resources to go get medical attention if you need it.”
Patterson reassures guys there aren’t any needles or blood involved for those worried about that. The exams run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 10 barber shops around town.
