City golf courses to open Friday

Best chances for showers and storms this evening

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE)  The weather hasn’t exactly been golfing friendly, however that isn’t stopping the Fort Wayne Parks & Recreation Department from opening McMillen, Shoaff and Foster Park golf courses on Friday, March 28.

The courses will open at noon and golfers can call for tee times or reserve online at

McMillen Park Golf Course: 427-6710
Shoaff Park Golf Course: 427-6745
Foster Park Golf Course: 427-6735

People can play the front nine holes at both Foster and Shoaff Parks and the back nine holes at McMillen Park.

“The golf course won’t be in excellent condition yet, but it will be playable,” Perry Ehresman, the Parks Department Director of Leisure Services, said. “We’re thinking the course will be in fine shape once everything gets melted and is frost-free.”

There ares still some snow piles around the courses, but they won’t be in the way of play. The courses are opening about three weeks later than usual.

“All the snow and cold extended into what we see as the spring season. We lost our spring season in March,” Ehresman said.

Ehresman estimated the courses lost a few thousand dollars in green fees because of the delayed opening. But, crews couldn’t even get out on the courses to start getting them ready until this week. Even though the links are open, winter weather is still lingering.

“If the weather takes a turn, we may have to close for a few days until it gets nice again, but the clubhouses will still be open,” Ehresman said.

Season tickets are on sale at the Main Office (705 East State Blvd.) and at all of the clubhouses.
