WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Despite the IPFW baseball team out-hitting Purdue 12-11, the Mastodons fell to instate rival Boilermakers, 7-1. The ‘Dons are now 5-16 on the season.
Four different IPFW players recorded a pair of hits on the night and eight starters recorded at least one. For the ‘Dons, Kristian Gayday was 2-3 while Carter Deboe and Kendall Whitman were 2-4, and Kevin Wirth went 2-5 and drove in the lone Mastodon run.
Starter Nate White suffered his third loss of the season, allowing three runs in 3.0 innings of work.
White got into trouble early, giving up back-to-back lead-off hits, but struck out the next two batters. After a walk loaded the bases, White induced a fly out to Tyler Shepherd, ending the Boilers threat.
In the top of the third, DeBoe drew a two-out walk and Shane Trevino followed with a single. Gayday stepped and delivered a single up the middle, but a diving Purdue shortstop knocked the ball down and threw DeBoe out at the plate, attempting to score from second.
In the bottom half of the third, the Boilermakers score three runs with the bases loaded on a walk, single, and a sacrifice fly.
IPFW led off the fourth inning with back-to-back singles by Wirth and Kaiser. The next three Mastodon batters would be retired, ending the IPFW threat.
Purdue added a run in the fourth and the fifth, but the ‘Dons escaped a one-out bases loaded jam in the sixth.
IPFW scored its only run of the game in the seventh on a two-out ground-rule RBI double by Kevin Wirth.
Purdue scored its final run in the eighth inning on a two-out double.
