FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – Matt Grogan’s spring break at UConn ended in a different way than he expected, as the rookie goaltender made his ECHL debut last week for a Komets team in need of major help between the pipes.
Grogan – who’s UConn team saw their season come to an end Saturday, March 15 – signed with the Komets last Thursday and started all three games over the weekend.
Grogan went 2-1 in those three starts and could loom large in the Komets quest for a playoff berth. The Komets also signed Max Strang on Tuesday, providing depth for a team that lost two goalies last week.
Last Tuesday Andrey Makarov was called up to the AHL. Then on Wednesday Ben Meisner had to leave the game against Orlando in the second period with a health issue. Meisner has not been activated from the reserve list since. Emergency goalie Larkin Saalfrank finished Wednesday’s game in net but has since been released. Kevin Murdock, another rookie goalie who was signed last Thursday, was released by the Komets after the weekend.
The Komets play at South Carolina Friday and Saturday.
