LEXINGTON, Va. – The record-breaking IPFW men’s basketball season came to an end on Saturday afternoon, as the Mastodons fell 106-95 to the VMI Keydets in the second round of the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament.
Luis Jacobo scored a career-high 30 points in his final collegiate game, while also pulling down 11 rebounds for the double-double. Joe Edwards scored 14 points, while Pierre Bland had 13, Joe Reed 11, and Steve Forbes 10. Jacobo dished out a team-high four assists, while Reed led the team with two steals.
The loss ends the Mastodon season with a 25-11 record, a program record for victories in a season, after winning the program’s first postseason game three days earlier.
The Mastodons and Keydets battled throughout the first half with six lead changes and nine tie scores. IPFW led by four at 32-28 with 8:06 to play after an Edwards jumper; however, the Keydets answered with a 5-0 run to take a one-point lead.
After another Edwards jumper put IPFW ahead 37-36, the hosts ended the first half on an 18-8 run over the final six minutes, taking a nine-point, 51-42 lead into the locker room at halftime.
IPFW closed to within as few as four points three mnutes into the half, and by six with 13:21 to play; however, a 10-0 run pushed the margin to double digits. The VMI advantage reached as many as 19 at 82-63, before the Mastodons fought back, closing to within seven with 26 seconds to play; however, the Keydets iced the game by making their last four free throws in the 11-point loss.
D.J. Covington scored a game-high 41 points for VMI, while QJ Peterson added 25.
