FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – A man was arrested after police say he shot 12 rounds out of his car’s sunroof last week on the city’s northwest side.

A Fort Wayne Police Department officer said he saw Michael P. Back, 23, of Fort Wayne, shooting a gun out of his sunroof near the area of Clinton and Edgewood just before 3 a.m. on Friday. The officer immediately tried to pull over Back’s car. The officer said Back drove through a red light near Lima and Edgewood and continued speeding southbound on Clinton.

When police pulled Back over, they found a gun in his car, along with shell casings. Back admitted to police he shot the gun while talking to his wife on the phone. He apparently said he “wasn’t shooting at anyone, just shooting at the sky.”

According to court documents, Back was charged with two counts of carrying a handgun without a license and reckless driving.

No one was hurt by the gunfire and police said it didn’t appear anything was damaged along Clinton Street where the shots were fired.

It is illegal to fire a gun within Fort Wayne city limits.
