FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – The Komets fell to Orlando 5-4 on Wednesday night in a key game at War Memorial Coliseum.
The Solar Bears opened the scoring with a power play goal just 3:05 into the first period, then took a 2-0 lead on an Eric Baier goal at 5:46. The Komets answered, with a Shawn Szydlowski power play goal sandwiched between goals by Mike Embach to give the Komets a 3-2 lead after the first 20 minutes.
29 seconds into the third period former Komet Mickey Lang knotted the game at 3-3 with his ECHL-leading 39th goal of the season. A Connor Goggin goal would give the Solar Bears a 4-3 lead heading into the final frame.
The Solar Bears added to their lead just 2:57 into the third period as a goal by Jacob Cepis made it 5-3. Less than a minute later, however, Embach would score again to garner a hat trick and cut Orlando’s lead to 5-4.
Komets starting goaltender Ben Meisner left the game midway through the second period due to a health concern. Larkin Saalfrank – who was just signed as an emergency goaltender when Andrey Makarov was called up to the AHL – then took his place in net.
