FORT WAYNE, Ind. – For the second straight match, the IPFW men’s volleyball team swept its opponent, topping the NJIT Highlanders by scores of 25-17, 25-18, 25-20 to improve to 15-4 on the season.
Andrew Sellan led the team with 16 kills, while hitting .481 for the match, as Eddie Rivera and Bryan Saunders each had seven kills on the evening. Gabriel Quinones dished out 28 assists in two sets, as Jordan Armstrong added 16 assists in the third set.
Sellan served up three aces – all in the first set – as David Frazee ended the second set with the team’s fourth and final ace of the match. Rivera led the team with 11 digs, while Luis Bertran added 10. Two players – Quinones and Rivera – each had two blocks.
The Mastodon never trailed in the first set, and used a 5-0 run in the middle of the frame – including two aces from Sellan – to pull away, and the ‘Dons cruised to the 25-17 opening-set win.
NJIT scored first in the second set, and led 5-4 before a 6-0 Mastodon run turned the one-point deficit into a five-point advantage.The lead reached as many as nine, as IPFW pulled away for a 25-18 victory in the second set.
After the ten-minute intermission, the Mastodons jumped ahead at 3-0 and never trailed again. The Highlanders would not let IPFW stretch to an extended lead; however, a Kevin Villela kill closed the door on the match, giving IPFW the 25-20 win.
IPFW hit .354 for the match (47 kills, 13 errors, 96 attempts), while picking up 5.5 blocks and 37 total digs.
The Mastodons return to action on Thursday, March 20 for the first of a pair of back-to-back games against the Grand Canyon Antelopes.
