FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – More than a hundred middle and high school girls from across the region spent Saturday afternoon learning about leadership. The Fort Wayne Girls Rock conference is focused on giving young women confidence and support. The year’s theme was “Shine Bright Like a Diamond.”
Organizers said the goal of the conference is to empower young women with positive influences.
“When you’re comfortable with yourself and you know who you are, your spirit is different, you know how to treat one another and take those things and be a leader and not a follower,” said Denita Washington, the executive director of Fort Wayne Girls Rock.
Washington believes it’s important to start building a solid foundation with young women from an early age.
“For the crime rate and things the way that they are, a lot of the focus goes to the boys. But the one thing that we wanted to do is just begin to be proactive with our girls to know who they are so that we don’t have to be in a reactive state, but a more proactive state,” said Washington.
Saturday’s event also featured a workshop for parents and a college panel of women from around Northeast Indiana.
