FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – Police said a man who had just bought more than $1,000 worth of items at Best Buy was jumped outside of the store as he was walking out. Two off-duty police officers were able to chase the suspect down and arrested him in a nearby store.
According to an affidavit for probable cause, the victim left a Fort Wayne Best Buy shortly before 1 p.m. on March 4 after buying $1,015 worth of items at the store, including an iPad Air.
Police said Samuel N. Firestine, 24, left the store a few minutes before and was standing outside near the exit doors as the victim walked out. Firestine grabbed one of the man’s two bags he was carrying and ran off.
The victim’s cries for help alerted two off-duty Columbia City Police Department officers who were inside of Best Buy at the time. The officers chased Firestine into a nearby store and arrested him.
Police said Firestine admitted to stealing the bag from the victim and said he needed money to eat. He told officers he decided to steal the victim’s items because he was an older man so he figured he could get away easier.
According to court documents, Firestine is facing a theft charge, which is a class D felony.
