Bridge work will impact traffic on Coliseum

Scattered or isolated storms Friday

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Starting Wednesday, March 12, the inside eastbound lane of SR 930/Coliseum Boulevard will be restricted as crews work on the Johnny Appleseed Bridge.

According to the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), motorists should watch for crews doing striping work along westbound SR 930/Coliseum Boulevard in preparation for the next phase of the work.

There will not be any lane restrictions on Anthony Boulevard at this time.

All restrictions will be during the hours of 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. as crews construct a temporary bridge from the inside lane on the existing bridge.

Motorists should be aware of traffic controls in this work zone, including signage and barrels, while the work is in progress. The daytime closures are scheduled to be completed by late March, weather permitting.

The work is part of the SR 930 bridge deck improvement and added travel lanes project. This project will increase capacity and provide a continuous three-lane section of highway, between Parnell Avenue and Crescent Avenue.

In addition, a left turn movement into IPFW from eastbound SR 930 will be allowed.

“The left-hand turn lane is an ongoing desire, it’s one that anytime we had an opportunity we would mention it,” said H. Jay Harris, Director of Physical Plant and Campus Safety for IPFW.

According to Harris, the left turn lane was closed several years ago because Coliseum Boulevard didn’t have room to cater to all of the traffic.

“That will give us the stacking room for cars that want to turn left onto campus,” said Harris.

Harris expects the project to allow traffic to flow more efficiently into and out of campus.

During construction, this entrance may temporarily be closed.

Pedestrian access will be allowed unless critical operations are in progress. INDOT is urging people to be alert when walking under the bridge later this summer. There will also be a height restriction under the bridge.

Primco was awarded this contract, based on the low bid of $6.1 million. The project is scheduled for completion by late November 2014, weather permitting.
