FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – Acme Bar and Grill is hosting a viewing party for the IPFW basketball game Monday night against South Dakota State University.
If IPFW heads to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) tournament, they will be the only Indiana team representing the state. School employees say this season’s successful run is giving the school great exposure.
“It’s great for the school, and certainly puts us on the map with a lot of folks. I think we’ll have a lot of people that maybe root for Notre Dame, or Purdue or Indiana hopefully can come behind us and support the Mastodons as we hopefully can win this tournament in South Dakota and go on to the Big Dance,” Justin Busch, Director of Alumni Relations at IPFW, said.
IPFW is on spring break this week, but the lack of students isn’t lessening the excitement.
“This is one of the best teams that we’ve seen in quite some time and it’s really a testament to Coach Tony and all of the hard work that that team has put in. Just by walking around the halls of campus, you can see a lot of congratulations and well wishes. If you walked around IPFW with your men’s basketball gear on, you were kind of swarmed by students and folks that wanted to wish them well,” Busch said.
Jeff Lowie has served as the scorebook keeper for the IPFW men’s and women’s basketball teams for the last nine years. He said it’s pretty much business as usual on campus, but everyone is very excited about the possibility of going to the NCAA Tournament.
“It would give great exposure to the school. We’re one of the largest schools in the state, and it would just give us more exposure outside of not only Fort Wayne abd Allen County, but also around Indy, and the southern part of the state to know that here we are, and we’ve got a pretty vibrant program,” Lowie said.
The viewing party to support the Dons starts Monday night at 9:30 p.m. The game will air on FOX College Sports and 1380 AM.
