INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Police made an arrest in a hit and run that killed a 7-month-old baby boy Tuesday night in Indianapolis.

Officers arrested Gary Shinnamon II, 30, of Indianapolis, on Thursday. He is preliminarily charged with failure to stop at an accident resulting in death and two counts of driving while license suspended. WISH-TV reports Shinnamon turned himself in to his attorney’s office on Thursday afternoon.

IMPD detectives said the baby was not buckled into his car seat at the time of the crash.

Investigators said the two vehicles were eastbound on 38th Street near I-65 when Shinnamon’s vehicle rear-ended a car that had a family of five in it. Police said Shinnamon’s car ended up in a ditch and the two occupants took off running from the scene.

When officers arrived, they found the 7-month old near a guardrail.  The baby and mother were transported to Riley Hospital for Children by ambulance.

The mother went to the hospital in good condition.  The baby’s father, a teenager, and a 3-year old in the car were transported to the hospital in good condition. The baby later died at the hospital.
