Police: Girl calls 911 after hearing pregnant mom being beaten

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – Police said a 10-year-old girl called police after hearing her pregnant mom screaming for help while her boyfriend beat her in their Fort Wayne home.

According to a police report, on February 26, David L. Esquivel, 33, of Fort Wayne, cornered his girlfriend in the bathroom and began to slap and punch her. The victim told police Esquivel had been drinking earlier that night.

Police said the victim eventually escaped from the bathroom. Esquivel followed her into their living room where he pinned her down on the couch while slapping and punching her.

The victim screamed for help and woke up her 10-year-old daughter who called the police department from her room, according to the police report.

When officers arrived at the scene, Esquivel told them “I [explicit] up. I’m going to jail. What I did was wrong.” He was arrested and taken to the Allen County Jail.

Officers said the victim had cuts, bruises, and scratches, along with a black eye. Police said she was 27 weeks pregnant.

According to court documents, Esquivel is facing the following charges:

  • Battery Resulting in Bodily Injury to a Pregnant Woman, a class C felony
  • Domestic Battery – Committed in Presence of Child Less Than 16 Years, a class D felony
