FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Following a three week absence, the IPFW men’s volleyball team returned to the national rankings coming in at No. 15 in the Week #8 edition of the AVCA Division I-II Coaches Top 15 Poll.
In addition to IPFW, four other MIVA squads appeared in the rankings. Loyola (Ill.) remained at No. 1 followed by Lewis, Ohio State, and Ball State at No. 12 through No. 14.
The Mastodons began play last week with a thrilling five-set win over conference rival Lewis on Thursday night to stun the then-No. 10 ranked Flyers. Eddie Rivera had 18 kills and Andrew Sellan added 16 while Omar Rivera finished with a season-high 57 assists to lead the way for the ‘Dons. IPFW saw its five-match win streak come to an end, however, on Saturday when it fell to top-ranked Loyola (Ill.) 3-1. Rivera and Sellan paced the Mastodons again with 14 and 12 kills, respectively.
As a team, IPFW ranks top-10 in the country in kills per set (13.60), assists per set (12.67), digs per set (9.56), and hitting percentage (.298). Junior setter Omar Rivera leads the MIVA in assists per set (11.37) and ranks fourth nationally while junior middle Bryan Saunders is second in the conference in hitting (.421) and seventh in the NCAA.
The Mastodons return to action on Friday, February 28 when it hosts Mount Olive at 7 p.m. inside the Gates Sports Center to kick-off a five-match homestand.
