FBI, Ind. police seek woman connected to murderer

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE)  Police are looking for a woman who may be connected a convicted murderer.

John Davis Smith was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison in 2001 in Ohio for the 1974 murder of his his first wife, Janice Hartman.

Twenty years after Hartman went missing, Smith’s brother,  Michael Smith, told police he had seen Hartman’s remains in a wooden box John Davis Smith had built. John Davis Smith is currently serving his sentence in Wayne County, Ohio. His second wife reportedly went missing in 1991.

The Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) and the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) is asking the public for help identifying the woman in the picture. 

Investigators believe the picture was taken at a mall in the Indianapolis area between the years 1975 and 1984. She may have been a friend of or a relative of Smith.

Police have not released anymore information on why they are looking for the woman in the photograph now.
