INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A man was critically injured after being hit by an SUV while changing a tire on the side of Interstate 65 in Indianapolis early Saturday morning. Police said the driver who hit him was later arrested for an OWI.

According to WANE’s sister station, WISH-TV, the accident happened around 4 a.m. on I-65 north, near the Meridian Street exit.

A man at the scene said he ran over a pothole while driving on I-65 and called his mom to help change the tire. His mom and her boyfriend, Paul Hines, responded to help change the tire.

As Hines was trying to change the tire, an SUV, driven by Lindsay Standeford, 24, of Mooresville, hit the car. The car was pushed forward, pinning Hines between the car and the guardrail.

Police said Hines was taken to Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital in “very critical condition.”

Officials said Standeford had a BAC of .14, which is almost twice the legal limit. She was arrested and preliminarily charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing serious bodily injury, a Class D felony.

The right two lanes of the highway were closed for about two hours while crews investigated the incident.
