CHURUBUSCO, Ind. (WANE)  – A dog was rescued by firefighters Wednesday night after falling through an icy pond in Churubusco.

According to Smith Township Fire Department Chief Chris Tomlinson, a neighbor saw the black lab fall through the ice and into a neighborhood pond in the 8000-block of County Road 700 N just after 5 p.m. The neighbor called the fire department for help.

Firefighters Bruce Shanabarger and Ben Rinker went in after the dog and three other firefighters helped from land.

According to Tomlinson, they got the dog out of the pond in about 10 minutes. Firefighters said the dog was not injured.

Tomlinson said this was only the fifth animal rescue the department has made in the past 20 years.
