Murder suspect makes first court appearance

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE)  A man charged with murdering a woman who was once his mother-in-law made his first appearance in court on Wednesday.

Freddie Alcantar Jr. is charged with the August 2013 murder of Debra Jones. 59-year-old Jones was found dead was found dead in her bathroom in the Creekwood subdivision in Fort Wayne. She had been stabbed in the head and neck.

Police used DNA evidence and cell phone data to confirm him as the suspect.

U.S. Marshals  arrested 36-year-old Alcantar in California in January. He was found in California after his cell phone was pinged.

Alcantar’s next hearing will be on March 5.
