BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Police in Bloomington say a 77-year-old man who fatally shot his wife of more than five decades and then himself could no longer take care of her.

Police Lt. Steve Kellams says detectives have interviewed several of the couple’s children, other relatives and employees at Meadowood Retirement Community but might never know an exact motive for Friday’s shooting.

The Herald-Times reports (http://bit.ly/M8TS5s ) police say Robert White of Ellettsville had lunch with 76-year-old Ruth White at the retirement center before returning to her room shortly before the shootings.

Kellams says Ruth White had moved to Meadowood after her husband was admitted to a hospital for a time.

He says investigators haven’t found any messages about the couple’s intentions but don’t believe the shooting was unplanned.
