The unusually snowy and cold winter has forced school districts to figure out how to make up for days missed without extending the school year too long. The following details how the four public school districts in Allen County plan on dealing with the issue.

Fort Wayne Community Schools

Fort Wayne Community Schools (FWCS) posted on its Facebook page that they expect to have a detailed plan by Monday, February 24. The administrator of the page later added that FWCS has no plans to change graduation dates. The district has missed 12 days of school due to weather.

Northwest Allen County Schools

Northwest Allen County Schools (NACS) has missed 13 days of school due to weather. The district posted a plan on its website on Tuesday and emphasized that the district will be maintaining its Spring Break schedule. The NACS school year will be extended to Wednesday, June 4. The district will request unconditional waivers for January 6 and 7 and extend the school day on the following days:

  • February 25, 26, and 27
  • March 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 11, 12, 13, 17, 18, 19, 20, 24, 25, and 26
  • April 15, 16, 17, 22, 23, and 24

Pick-ups on these days will remain the same as before but afternoon drop-off times will be 50 minutes later. See the NACS website for the many details of the make-up plan and for an updated calendar for the school year.

Southwest Allen County Schools

Southwest Allen County Schools (SACS) had planned on extending the school year well  into June to make up missed days, however an option granted by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz may mean students won’t have to be in class until mid-June.  SACS has proposed taking advantage of eLearning or virtual learning via computers and the internet outside of class time.  As of Wednesday, February 19, SACS was scheduled to hold its last day of classes on Wednesday, June 11, with graduation still scheduled for Saturday, June 7.  However if Superintendent Ritz approves the eLearning proposal, SACS would make up five days and hold its last day of school on Wednesday, June 4.  The eLearning program would begin on Monday, March 3.  The district has missed 13 days of school due to weather.

East Allen County Schools

The East Allen County Schools (EACS) school board will meet on Tuesday night to discuss the make-up plan. NewsChannel 15 will update this article if and when the information is disseminated. The district has missed 13 days of school due to weather.
