DENVER - The IPFW women’s basketball team dropped their final Summit League road game of the season, as the Mastodons fell to Denver 71-66.
Haley Seibert led IPFW (12-13 overall, 5-6 Summit League) with 20 points on 6-of-10 shooting while also leading the Mastodons with five assists and three steals. Amanda Hyde added 18 points, four rebounds, and three assists while Rachel Rinehart also scored in double figures with 12 points.
IPFW controlled the game early as Seibert broke a 6-6 tie with her second three-pointer of the night at the 16:20 mark. Denver countered with a 9-3 run to take its own three-point lead, 15-12, with 12:54 to play.
The Pioneers continued to lead until late in the first half when Rinehart connected on a three-pointer with 2:12 to play, giving IPFW a 29-28 lead. It appeared as if the ‘Dons would head into the locker room with a lead, but IPFW fouled Alison Janecek with 0.7 left on the clock. Janecek made one of her two free throw attempts, tying the score 32-32 at the half.
Denver scored the first two baskets to open the second half, as it took the early lead. Down six, IPFW answered with an 11-2 run to take a 45-42 lead with 14:42 to play in the game.
The Pioneers powered ahead and took a one-point lead, 52-51, with 10:07, before IPFW countered with 13-4 run over a span of 4:36, pushing the team to a 64-56 lead with 5:31 to go in the game.
From there, the Mastodon offense struggled as they scored just two points, including going scoreless in the final two minutes, as Denver ended the game on a 15-2 run to snatch the victory away from the ‘Dons.
IPFW connected on 23-of-63 (38.1%) from the field, 10-of-36 (27.8%) from behind the arc and 8-of-11 at the free throw line on the afternoon.
IPFW returns home to face in-state rival IUPUI on February 22 in a 3 p.m. tip-off.
