FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) Firefighters responded to a report of smoke inside the new Art Van Furniture store on Coliseum Boulevard around 9:00 Friday night. It’s located in the Glenbrook Plaza just across from Glenbrook Square Mall.
The store opened its first Fort Wayne location six days ago, on Saturday, February 8.
“The store was actually occupied,” Mark Nelson, a deputy fire chief with the Fort Wayne Police Department, said. “There was a fire found inside the structure and they evacuated.”
Once firefighters got inside, they did find flames and were able to put them out. Assistant Fire Chief Mark Nelson said investigators aren’t sure of the cause, but they are focusing on the sign on the front of the building.
“Our first crews found some heavy smoke in the front of the building,” Nelson said.
Both Art Van and the adjacent Dick’s Sporting Goods were occupied and everyone was safely evacuated. “Police helped us evacuate that structure while we battled the fire inside,” Nelson said.
Police blocked off traffic into that shopping center. “We did have a lot of vehicles trying to come in to see what was going on,” Nelson said. “So police did secure some of the entrances to keep the traffic
Petco is located right next door to Art Van. Animal Care & Control officials were called to the scene as a precaution but no animals appear to have been affected or in danger, and were not evacuated. No smoke was found inside that building.
