Woman dies in Marion house fire

MARION, Ind. (WANE) – A woman died in a house fire in Marion early Sunday morning. Four other people escaped the fire, according to police.

According to the Marion Police Department, the fire broke out at a home at 537 East Sherman Street at around 2:10 a.m.

Police officers arrived on scene first and saw heavy smoke and flames coming from the home.

Four people escaped from the home and those people told police there may still be one more person inside. The officers broke a window and yelled into the home, but nobody replied.

Fire crews arrived on scene and found a woman dead inside the home.

Police said three officers were treated for smoke inhalation at Marion General Hospital. They were later released.

The Marion Fire Department, along with the State Fire Marshal, is investigating the circumstances around the fire.
