FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – Fort Wayne firefighters responded to a fire alarm inside Jack Cooper Transport on Bluffton Road early Thursday morning.

The initial alarm went off at 12:51 a.m. and about twenty minutes later additional crews were called after heavy smoke was seen coming from an overhead door.

The transport company hauls vehicles for various automakers including General Motors in Allen County. It’s located at 8222 Bluffton Road near Airport Expressway. Fire officials said the building was approximately 80,000 square feet.

Fire officials said a hauler inside the building caught fire and filled the large building with smoke. Water was spraying from an overhead sprinkler system, according to officials.

Crews battled heavy smoke and near zero visibility before eventually finding the fire and putting it out. Everything was under control in about an hour.

No employees were inside the building at the time of the fire.

A department report said the building sustained minor fire and water damage and moderate smoke damage.

The cause is under investigation.
