INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana’s unemployment rate has dropped to 6.9 percent, reaching its lowest level in more than five years.

Figures released Tuesday by the state Department of Workforce Development show Indiana’s jobless rate fell four-tenths of a percentage point last month. The unemployment rate for December is the state’s lowest since October 2008 when many job cuts were taking place as the recession deepened.

The state’s jobless rate has been dropping since the summer after having been long stuck above 8 percent.

Indiana’s unemployment rate is slightly higher than the national rate of 6.7 percent. The new report shows nearly 220,000 people were looking for jobs last month in Indiana.
